Sonia is a New Zealand artist, specialising in oil-on-canvas seascapes and landscapes. This land which gives her a sense of home and belonging, and has shaped our identity, is always a source of inspiration. The foundation of Sonia's work comes from a sense of pre-history; untouched seascapes conveying serene isolation, capturing a sense of the familiar but not necessarily a specific place; also uninhabited landscapes, some with faint impressions of former human presence. Trees are a constant theme of her work and are either shown from a birds-eye perspective, giving a sense of the abstract to otherwise recognisable imagery, or anchored against stormy skies, struggling with the elements, which she uses as a metaphor for the human condition.

Although still in the representational genre, by manipulating colour and perspective within the scene, she likes to play with the emotions of the paintings. Essentially, she wants her paintings to have their own voice.

Sonia lives in the Mahurangi region and has an Advanced level 7 Diploma of Art and Design, majoring in painting and her work is sold through several New Zealand galleries, and through private commissions here and overseas.
